Visual Communications Students Design Windows for Byer California

FIDM Students recently worked with famed San Francisco-based brand Byer California to create a series of windows on campus.

Visual Communications Students in Roy Kunkle's Design Installation class in San Francisco had Byer California as their client during the Fall quarter. The students were given information on their client the first day of class and asked to do research and begin preparing ideas for a series of four windows.

By the third week of class those ideas were refined and presented to Byer's Director of Strategy, Nadine Manfredi. Nadine worked with the students to narrow down the best concepts and signed off on the direction the students would go. On the final day of class the students presented their work to company president, Philip Byer, and designer, Alana O’Hearn.

The client was impressed with the attention students gave to their target market research and the story they told through the four windows. The students envisioned a women who starts her day with technology, takes a flight for a meeting, uses public transportation to get to her urban destination, and then settles into a nice boutique hotel at the end of the day.

Since opening their doors over 50 years ago, Byer California grew into a major source of Junior, Misses and Girls fashions for national and regional department stores, specialty stores, and online retailers. Headquartered in San Francisco, with offices in Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong, Byer California has evolved into a multi-brand design, marketing, and manufacturing company.
